Sounds of Nature ~ Sprague Brook Park ~

Location: Sprague Brook - Cross County Ski Trail Parking Area

Join Ranger Stephanie as we listen to the sounds of nature and discover how animals communicate with each other and what obstacles they must overcome to get their point across. We will be traveling through two habitat types to listen for the differences between ecological soundscapes and the animals that live there.

· Meeting location: Cross County Ski Trail Parking Area

· Duration: 1.5-2 hrs

· Distance: Approximately 2 miles

· Elevation: moderate elevation change

· Trail Conditions: Dirt and stone packed trails; we will spend a significant amount of time in open areas, so sunscreen is recommended

· Equipment Needed: Sturdy hiking boots; any hiking materials you may need for a slow-paced hike

· Other: No wheelchair/stroller accessibility, no dogs for this program please!

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Identification and Survey Training ~Emery Park ~

Location: Emery Park - Field House

We need your help! Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is an invasive species that is rapidly spreading through Erie County. This insect kills hemlock trees, often in less than ten years from initial infestation, much like the emerald ash borer did to all of the ash trees. Join us to learn how to identify and report HWA infestations and help us save as many hemlocks as possible!
  • Meeting Location: Emery Park Field House 
  • Distance: Approximately <1 mile
  • Elevation: Some elevation change
  • Trail Conditions: Dirt trail and stairs
  • Equipment Needed: Smartphone & download of "iMapInvasives Mobile by SUNY ESF" smartphone application (free)

Bureau of Forestry Hike

10am - 12pm

Location: Bureau of Forestry - Bureau of Forestry Sugar Shack and Sawmill

Join the Bureau of Forestry Staff on a tour of the Old Scarbuck Trail where you will learn about the history of the forestry lot system, the ecosystem of Forestry Lot 1, and the plans for updating the Forestry Management Plan. This is a great opportunity to ask question about the Erie County Parks Forestry Lots in Holland, Chaffee, East Concord, and Sardinia.
 
Trail Description: Easy, 1.7 Miles, Hardwood Forest, Conifer Plantation, Creeks, Marshlands, Part of the Fingerlakes Trail System, Can be wet and muddy after a rain event, some hills.
 
Accessibility: Not wheelchair or walker accessible.
 
Dogs: Allowed on leash
 
Bathrooms: Located at the Forestry Visitor Center

Eternal Flame Hike (Peak Fall Colors!) ~ Chestnut Ridge Park ~

10am

Location: Chestnut Ridge - Eternal Flame Lot, Chestnut Ridge Park

Join Ranger Roy for a hike through the Hemlock Cathedral down to the famous Eternal Flame. This will be a relatively short hike of less than 2 miles but will include a matching steep descent in and ascent out.

· Meeting Location: Eternal Flame Lot, Chestnut Ridge Park Click here for a map to the meeting location

· Duration: 1 to 2 hours

· Distance: <2 miles

· Elevation: About 175 feet elevation change each way.

· Trail Conditions: Variable, with woods, built steps, streambed and worn sections of steep trail. The safest and suggested way to reach the flame is to walk mostly in the streambed. Water levels will vary depending on recent weather.

· Equipment needed: Come equipped with your 10 essentials, good boots and hiking poles (if you use them). If there has been any rain in the days leading up to the hike the ranger will be wearing tall rubber boots.

· Other: No stroller/wheelchair accessibility, dogs are welcome on a leash.

Fall Bird Migration ~ Wendt Beach Park ~

Location: Wendt Park - Main parking lot, Wendt Beach Park

Join Ranger Nikki at Wendt Beach Park for a fall bird migration walk. We will take our time walking on the boardwalk and beach looking for any bird species that might be migrating out of our area for the winter or who are preparing for the long winter ahead. All birding levels welcome!

· Meeting Location: Main parking lot, Wendt Beach Park

· Duration:1-2 hours

· Elevation: Flat

· Surface Description: Cement trail and boardwalk, may walk the beach as well

· Equipment Needed: Proper footwear for conditions, binoculars, bird guide

· Other: No dogs please; wheelchair and stroller accessible limited to cement and boardwalk areas – beach is not accessible to wheelchairs/strollers

Intense Fall Hike

10am

Location: Sergeant Mark A. Rademacher Memorial Park/Hunters Creek - Hunters Creek Road lot, about 1000 feet south of Rt 78/Strykersville Rd. This is NOT the entrance most visitors are more familiar with on Centerline Rd.

Erie County's Hunters Creek Park has an extensive and varied trail system. Come with Ranger Roy for a 4 to 6-mile hike in autumn conditions. We will go over some preparation and safety basics before heading out. This hike will be strenuous and challenging, not a good first hike.

· Meeting Location: Hunters Creek Road lot, about 1000 feet south of Rt 78/Strykersville Rd. This is NOT the entrance most visitors are more familiar with on Centerline Rd. 

· Duration: 2-3 hours

· Distance: 4-6 miles

· Elevation: Significant elevation changes

· Trail Conditions: Potential for cool fall temps and muddy trails. Will be walking wooded trails

· Equipment Needed: Come equipped with your 10 essentials, good boots, layers of clothing, hiking crampons if you have them and poles if you use them. Unless it has been very dry for at least a week, the ranger will have tall rubber boots on.

· Other: No stroller/wheelchair accessibility, dogs are welcome on a leash

Como Lake Park History

Location: Como Lake - Casino, Como Lake Park

Join Ranger Nikki for a walk at Como Lake Park to learn the history of this great heritage park. Walk from the Casino over the man-made islands to see the lighthouse. Come celebrate our parks during our Centennial year!!

Preparing Field Grown Trees for Transplanting ~ Chestnut Ridge Park ~

Location: Chestnut Ridge - Chestnut Ridge Casino

Join the Erie County Bureau of Forestry and learn how to prepare trees for transplanting. This workshop is part of the Community Forestry Partnership Project and will provide 3 hours of hands-on training to learn about dormant tree identification, phenology, tree reproduction and survival strategies, transplanting techniques, root pruning, bare-rooting trees, and preparing for transplanting.

Transplanting Trees into the Nursery

Location: Bureau of Forestry - Erie County Bureau of Forestry office

Join the Erie County Bureau of Forestry and learn how to transplant trees into the nursery. This workshop is part of the Community Forestry Partnership Project and will provide 3 hours of hands-on training to learn about various methods to grow trees in the nursery for future planting projects. Methods include soil, light, and water considerations, potting, air pruning beds, gravel beds, and raised beds.

  • 9AM - 10AM: Low-stimulation and accessible hour for individuals requiring accessibility assistance and a low-stimulation environment to visit Santa! To reserve a visit during this hour, please contact the Office of People with Disabilities at (716) 858-6215.

Enter at the main entrance of Chestnut Ridge Park and parking will be available in the main lot only. Parking is limited, so come early and prepare to wait for an open spot, if the lot is closed.
