The Wendt Mansion in Derby was constructed by Henry W. Wendt, Jr. as a summer residence in the late nineteenth century. The Wendt family, founders and heirs of the Buffalo Forge Company, named the home 'The Ridgewood' and enjoyed its use well into the twentieth century. Erie County acquired the mansion, outbuildings, and 178 beautiful lakefront acres in 1973 for use as a public park.
The Wendt Mansion is an excellent example of the Colonial Revival style, characterized by symmetrical patterns of fenestration, classical detailing, accentuated doors and windows, and the use of bay/bow windows.
In 2022, $6 million of RENEW Plan funding through the American Rescue Plan was dedicated to the restoration of the Wendt Mansion.
